BERRY PICKING TIME

Well official "berry picking" has come to the north country. This time of year the forest are full of all kinds of berries. It is just amazing all the different berries we have. When you walk into the forest it smells so sweet from all the berries. We pick two kinds of berries to make into jelly and syrup.

First we pick the wild raspberries. We use to have this wonderful patch by our canoe lakes, but the grasses took over that area and choked out the berries so now we found a new area and whalla.......it is right down the road from us!! Makes it very convenient.

Sometimes we have to watch out for the moose. Especially if there is a mom and babies. Mom gets very upset if you get close to them and she can stomp you pretty bad. Well we had visitor's this time. Mom wasn't too mad until the baby kept coming towards us then she didn't like that. We had to yell at the baby and wave our arms to get them to move off into the forest which they did.

Visitor's we had while picking berries. This is the baby and Mom is in the background.

The next berries we get are high bush cranberries. We have to drive a few miles to get those, but we make it a day trip so it is always fun. Well as long as it doesn't rain. We have to hike up this trail to get to the cranberry patch and of course watch out for bears. This area is heavily populated with bears so we always have to take our bear spray and gun, but it is still fun. Luckily we have never encounter a bear while picking berries.

A lot of the trail is muddy so they have put in these boardwalks which makes it much easier.

This trail takes you up pretty high and the view is just spectacular.

And here are the results of our picking efforts. :)

It is always so much fun to go berry picking. It is a tradition with us and kicks off our fall season. We wish we could find a blueberry patch, but those are harder to find here on the peninsula. We need to go into the Interior to find them. Maybe when we retire we can spend some time doing that. :)

Hopefully we will get the jelly and syrup made this weekend. Have a three day weekend so maybe we will get time. When we get the cranberries done I will do a post on how to make jelly and syrup so stay tuned. :)

Thanks for joining me on our berry picking journey. Everyone have a great day!! :)

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN

My grandkids are becoming quite the cooks. My daughter is the publisher of  The Country Register of Minnesota and she has a new section of the paper that she is calling Kids in the Kitchen. I thought maybe I would start sharing some of the recipes with you that maybe you could try out with your kids or grandkids.

Summer is starting to wind down, but there is still plenty of heat going on in a lot of the country so there is still time to make "frozen pops"!

recipes

Here is what you will need:

2 cups blue Powerade, Gatorade, or Kool-Aid
12 - 5-0z. disposable cups
1 cup frozen whipped topping
1 cup vanilla yogurt
12 craft sticks
2 cups cran-raspberry or cran-apple juice

How to make it:

  1. Divide blue juice between the 12 plastic cups. Place the cups in the freezer until juice is partially frozen.
  2. Mix whipped topping and yogurt together.
  3. Divide the white mixture between the 12 cups.
  4. Put a craft stick into the center of each pop and return to the freezer for about 45 minutes.
  5. Add the red juice to the cups and place back into the freezer until fully frozen.

Looks good to me. Now...if I just had my grandkids around to make them for me! I sure do miss those grandkids of mine. :)

So give this a try and stay cool where ever you are. As far as me up here in the north country.......fall is starting to slowly move in and the rainy season is here so no more heat up here. :(

Enjoy!!

FARMHOUSE FALL

Well the summer market is finally starting to wind down. I had a tremendous July. It was a lot of fun. Now the fishing is winding down and the tourist are starting to leave so I have a little breathing room. Once the market is done I can get back to sewing for me again....oh wait......then I have to start preparing for the Christmas shows!!! Oh no!!! :)

I really like to do treasuries, but in the summer I just don't get much time to do them so since I have a little time today I thought I would put together a treasury and show you what the OFG Team has in their fall shops. Lots of goodies and wonderful gift items. I just love fall and all the colors! Makes me want to get in my sewing room and start my fall projects. Maybe tomorrow.....there is always tomorrow. Or as Scarlett said....."after all tomorrow is another day". Oh my.....aging myself. :)

 Hope you enjoy.

fabric

Thanks to everyone that entered my giveaway. I do love to do these. Hopefully when the busy summer is over I can do more.

question mark

Which reminds me.........I have been meaning to ask all of you.....what kind of giveaways do you usually participate in?  Do you like fabric, supplies, items that are already made? I would be interested to know what you  like. I could do a survey on here and I did read once how to do an "official survey box", but I need time to figure out how to do this....hmmmm....need to put that on my "winter" project list. :)

Thanks again to everyone who participated in my giveaway. Have a great day!!
