DECORATING WITH NATURE

I know a lot of you do some great jobs of decorating your homes for the fall season. I wish I was one of them. :)  My husband and I are retired and we now live in a smaller house (less to clean...more time to play!) so I don't have much room to do a lot of decorating. Now on the other hand....my daughter does a lot of decorating!

I am sharing this article with all of you that want a few ideas on your decorating for fall.

Now that the air is getting crisper, the sun is setting sooner and the leaves are turning those wonderful colors of yellow, orange and red; it is time to decorate for fall!

Fall decorating does not have to be expensive. You can collect items right from your own backyard. Some of the items, such as corn stalks and Indian corn can be purchased at a nearby farmer’s market.

Most of the items listed below can be found for free or for a minimal cost:

Colored leaves and pine cones always add color to your home. I love the old frame that is used for this that you can get from your local thrift shop.

Acorns, twigs and branches bring the outside in your home. I can even do this one as I have plenty of branches and I can get these little pumpkins from hobby store.

Now I don't have corn stalks up here, but those of you that do they make a great front porch decoration. My daughter uses corn stalks sometimes, but then she always goes way over the top in her outside decorating. :)

And what is the biggest item to decorate with nature....why it is pumpkins of course and those that can get straw bales also what a great display you can make.

So all of you that live where all this is available you can use these items to create a really nice entrance to your home or your front porch. Now me……I pretty much have to stick to spruce boughs, birch, slate colored rocks and glacier mud! :)  Oh well….I will just have to look at all the pretty colors.

Have fun decorating! :)

Visitor's Today

Happy Fall everyone! It is officially fall now, but up here in the north country it has been fall for a few weeks now. A lot of our leaves are gone, but the ground cover is still in color. I thought I would share with you a few visitor's we had yesterday. We start to see the caribou in the fall around the house as they are moving to their winter grounds north of us. They like to come and eat our grass so I get to see them quite often. Did have a huge bull the other day, but he was too far away to get a picture. :)

I have to sneak out the front door to take pictures so I don't spook them.

This is a normal size caribou.

Here is the group of them. Some of the herds are pretty large with lots of females and one big male, but this is only a couple of them.

I will keep an eye out for the really big males and hopefully get some pictures for you. :)

Have a wonderful day! :)

Fabric Bowl-----I Took A Class

Well the Summer Market season is over for another year. Had a pretty good season. There were a fair amount of summer visitors this year. We did have a few days that we didn't get to even set up as the winds were blowing so hard that the tents would have gone airborne! As it was two of the days we did set up the winds started to blow so hard that we all had to take down fast. There were tents blowing everywhere (even when they are staked down!) and tents were just snapping and breaking. I HATE THE WIND! But other than that it was a good season.

Now that the market is over I am needing to gear up for the fall and Christmas shows. YIKES! I did have a chance to take a class from my local quilt shop which I haven't done in years. I learned how to make one of these fabric bowls. :)

I think they are so nice. You can use all kinds of fabrics and colors. I have all these ideas of colors going through my head now. I thought I would start with fall colors. I just love fall and all the colors. I just can't get enough of them.

This will be the bottom of the bowl.

Then I needed to make the cord that are the sides of the bowl. This can be a little time consuming, but once I got the hang of it it went pretty good.

Had to get a new foot for my machine. It is called a "beading" foot. I didn't even know there was such a thing. It works pretty slick in pulling the fabric and clothes line together to make the cording.

Then you have to sew the cording to the base of the basket so you have to go around and around and around and around some more! Whew....tires your little hand out. :)

After you have sewn all the cording to the base and ended off the cording you are done. Whalla.......a fabric bowl!

The whole process takes some time, but the end product I think is great. Hmmmmm.......looks like some Christmas presents making are in my future. And all those Christmas shows I need to do...yep....bowl making here we come. :)  This bowl is actually going to be available on my Old Farmhouse Gathering Team Harvest Happenings Celebration next week, but I will let you know about that in a few days. :)

Well off to the sewing room....working on some more fall goodies and I am actually finishing up a UFO that I have had for years! Look like it will turn out ok...I will show you when I am done.

Have a great day!
