SUMMER HALF OVER!

Well summer is half over now. I know so many of you have been baking in the hot sun this summer and are probably ready for some cooler weather, but up here in Alaska we are always sad that summer moves along so fast. Our rainy season will be starting soon and then we just go back into winter. Oh my…what a terrible thought!

How has everyone’s summer been going? I am still doing two local markets a week. Only three more weeks for one of the shows and then I will be down to only one, which although they have been really good it will be nice not to be so hurried all the time. Yesterday’s market was pretty disastrous though. The wind was blowing like crazy and tents were getting blown all over the place! We were all holding onto our tents and merchandise to keep it from blowing away and after about 5 tents were blown away down the parking lot it was time for me to go! I did tear one of my panels, but I think I can fix it. WOW….what an experience.

Speaking of summers……along with summers comes our old friends….the flies. I thought this article might be of some help to all of you. Of course I do not get many flies, but I have mosquitoes the size of bombers! The shoo fly screen started in Colonial times when women used shoo fly screens to keep those pesky flies off their foods. Today, shoo fly screens are becoming increasingly popular and look good in the primitive/colonial decorated homes. Here is an easy way to make your own shoo fly screen:

1.      Look for a strainer with the removable handle and wire. It will pop right off all in one piece. It is okay if the strainer is dented or rusty. It will add to its character.

2.      Purchase a wooden knob at a craft store. Make sure you buy a knob that has a pre-drilled hole. It should also include a screw for attaching.

3.      Paint the wood knob in a color of your choice. After the paint is dry, sand the edges to distress it and then apply a coat of dark walnut stain, wipe off and let dry.

4.      Last, attach the wooden knob to the top of the strainer using a screwdriver.

Sounds pretty easy to me which is really nice…..the easier the better. J

So that is all for this week. I hope everyone is having a great summer even though as I look out my window here it is raining again. Oh well….such is life. As they say up here…….if you can’t do it in the rain you can’t do it in Alaska. J Take care and have a great week! Make sure you check out the new recipe.

  2. I sat here laughing when i was picturing all of you guys trying to hang onto the tents and merchandise ( although I am sure it wasn't funny at the time.) What a day that must have been. The shoo fly screen is cool, I may have o make some of those next summer.

  3. I've been in your shoes, with the weather playing up at a show! I felt for you when I read that bit in your blog. As for the shoo fly screen ...I've noticed that more and more of them are coming back into 'fashion' I can't figure out why they ever went out :-) LOL.
